The Summer Drink You NEED To Make!

One of my favourite parts of doing this whole food blog thing, is "research" for great food things to pass along to you all. So in the interest of research, I embarked on a discovery journey to mix up a great summer cocktail for those weekends at the cottage, or really, any sunny day that ends with a Y, and a lounge chair on a back deck.

I wanted to create something fresh, little bit sweet, and light. I find beer is so heavy on a hot day, so I knew that was out as a starting point. Tequila lands me on my rear end, and I can't stand the taste of Gin, so those were out as well. It came down to Vodka or Whiskey, and after about 3 or 4 combinations of each, I came up with this winner! No mom, not all in the same day.

As you know, I preach fresh and local all the time, and this drink is true to that. During my weekly trip to the farmer's market, I picked up a beautiful mint plant, and some fresh strawberries at the store. Then, for the vodka, I picked up a bottle from Top Shelf Distillers, in Perth, ON. It is produced from locally-sourced corn, and has a bit of a sweet taste, and is light and fresh. It served as a perfect base as it compliments the rest of the ingredients and doesn't overpower. Be sure to check out the rest of their great products they have available!

Other than the mint and strawberries, and the Top Shelf vodka, you'll need lemonade, a fresh lime, and some soda water, as well as a stemless wine glass, some ice, and a muddler. Muddling the strawberries, mint and vodka together really brings the flavours together and enhances the drink.

Making the drink is pretty simple. Add the mint, strawberries and vodka to the bottom of the glass and muddle. Add the lime juice, and lemonade, then the ice. Finish by topping it off with soda water and garnish with a lime slice and strawberry.

The blend of all these fresh ingredients makes it the perfect drink to sit and enjoy with some music on and the sun shining down. A word of caution however, if you don't stand up until after you've had 2 or more of these beauties, you may find yourself a bit wobbly as you take your first couple steps. So worth it though!

Hope you enjoy this drink as much as I did creating it. I'm open to fun names for it so send them along. Until then, we'll just call it Beautifully Delicious!
